Hundreds of motorway bridges have been constructed in Slovakia during the 20 years of existence of NDS

Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, a.s. (the National Motorway Company, hereinafter referred to as “NDS”) has currently 874 bridges under its management, which make up to around one tenth of the whole motorway infrastructure network in Slovakia. This year, NDS is celebrating 20 years of its existence, whereas 433 new bridges have been added to the infrastructure network since its establishment. By far the largest number of bridges is located in the Žilina region (north Slovakia).

The Valy Bridge located near the municipality Čierne pri Čadci, being a part of the D3 motorway section in the Kysuce region, is the most interesting one. With a height of 84 metres, it is considered to be the highest bridge in Slovakia. This unique bridge construction was put into operation by NDS in 2017.

The motorway flyover crossing the urban area of the town of Považská Bystrica is also an architectural gem with a unique technical design. It is the first motorway bridge with a load-bearing structure that supports the entire width of the motorway profile with only one lateral support. It was put into operation by NDS in 2010.

The collection of motorway bridges will soon be expanded by the future longest flyover in the whole country that is currently being constructed on the Kriváň – Mýtna section of the R2 expressway. After its completion, it will be approximately 4.5 km long.

The longest motorway bridges managed by NDS are currently the two bridges located near the municipality of Hričov: one is a flyover over the Hričov Canal with a length of 1.8 km, the other is a bridge over the Hričov water reservoir with a length of 1.5 km.

The National Motorway Company was established on 1 February 2025 and celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Since its establishment, NDS has been the biggest investor in road infrastructure in Slovakia, responsible for the preparation, construction and operation of the country's most important arterial roads. Every year, the NDS Motorway Patrol service helps thousands of drivers in need.
