In 2007, NDS put into operation the motorway tunnel Sitina which is more than 1,4 km long and located in Bratislava. The Sitina tunnel has significantly contributed to relieving the capital from the transit traffic passing through Bratislava on the way to the Czech Republic and vice versa.
Over the years, NDS has continued with tunnel construction mostly in eastern Slovakia: in 2009, the tunnel Bôrik was completed, and in 2015 the tunnel Šibenik – both located in the Prešov region. In the period from 2017 to 2021, the motorway infrastructure in the Žilina region was significantly growing, including five new tunnels: Poľana, Svrčinovec, Považský Chlmec, Ovčiarsko and Žilina.
In 2021, NDS put the Prešov tunnel into operation, and in 2023, the so far youngest tunnel Bikoš became part of the motorway network in eastern Slovakia. In the coming years, another tunnel will be completed in this region – the Okruhliak tunnel currently being under construction as part of the section of the R4 Prešov – Northern Bypass, Stage II.
There are also two other tunnels being constructed in the Žilina region – the Čebrať and Višňové tunnel. After its completion, the Višňové tunnel will be the longest motorway tunnel in Slovakia with a length of almost 7,5km. NDS is currently procuring a contractor for the D1 Turany – Hubová motorway section that will encompass two motorway tunnels – Korbeľka and Havran. After completing this section, Slovakia will have a direct motorway connection between Bratislava and Košice, and the drivers will pass through 10 tunnels when using this route.
The National Motorway Company was established on 1 February 2025 and celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Since its founding, NDS has been the biggest investor in road infrastructure in Slovakia, responsible for the preparation, construction and operation of the country's most important arterial roads. Every year, the NDS Motorway Patrol service helps thousands of drivers in need.
