In the event of a car breakdown, every minute counts

If a car breaks down on a motorway, the most important thing is to ensure the safety of all passengers. Subsequently, it is essential to remove the broken-down vehicle from the motorway as soon as possible. An obstacle like this might lead to a domino effect and be the cause of further accidents. Therefore, Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, a.s. (National Motorway Company, hereafter referred to as “NDS”) advises drivers to contact their insurance company immediately after informing the NDS Motorway Patrol, as the insurance company's assistance services can arrange for the vehicle to be towed away.

The Motorway Patrol is a free-of-charge service provided by NDS that plays a key role in the event of an incident on the motorway. For example, in case of a flat tire, the driver should pull the vehicle as close to the road shoulder as possible, turn on the hazard lights, and move to safety behind the guardrail. Once in a safe location, the driver should immediately call the NDS Motorway Patrol, which will provide cover for the broken-down vehicle, thus protecting the vehicle itself and warning other drivers of the obstacle using high-visibility warning signage.

“Motorway Patrol crews are ready to help drivers in need 24/7, and the drivers can reach them by calling 0800 100 007. Any obstacle on the motorway poses a high risk of other related accidents, and every minute counts. Therefore, the aim of the Motorway Patrol is not only to help the drivers, but to do so as quickly as possible,” said Rastislav Droppa, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors and Operations Section Director

This issue is also addressed in the legislation, which states that the obstacle must be removed as soon as possible to prevent further incidents. The law specifies that the owner/driver of the vehicle is responsible for removing the immobile vehicle – the obstacle – from the road. “Of course, ideally, this situation is solved by the driver himself with the help of the insurance company's assistance services,” Rastislav Droppa remarked.

The Motorway Patrol is a free-of-charge service provided by the National Motorway Company that has been in operation for 15 years. Drivers in need across the whole country can contact the Motorway Patrol 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Since January 2025, the Motorway Patrol has intervened in 16,770 cases, most often providing a safe cover to vehicles in need.
