World Wetlands Day: The revitalization of wetlands near Valaliky is progressing

Along with the construction of the Košice bypass in eastern Slovakia, Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, a.s. (the National Motorway Company, hereinafter referred to as “NDS”) is fulfilling its obligations towards the environment. Last year, the work on the revitalisation of wetlands near the Valaliky municipality was launched. This year, the construction of the wetlands will be completed.

Towards the end of 2024, two more construction objects on the expressway R2 Šaca – Košické Oľšany, section II, were handed over for use, making two new bridges part of the road infrastructure in the eastern region of Slovakia before the start of the winter season. One bridge passes over the future R2 expressway between the Košice district of Krásna and the village of Nižná Hutka, the other bridge is located near the municipality of Valaliky.

At the same time, works on the revitalisation of wetlands stretching over more than 52 thousand square metres are underway. The revitalisation and subsequent care of the wetlands was a condition imposed by the permitting authorities.

„Last year, we managed to remove the invasive plant species such as goldenrod from the given site, we also improved the condition of native tree species and built access roads,“ informed Mr. Július Mihálik, the Investment Section Director of NDS.

Especially the invasive plant species of goldenrod had to be removed from the site manually, with the occasional use of light machinery. This year, NDS plans to construct a retention tank, a set of ponds, followed by planting suitable greenery.

Wetlands are one of the most valuable parts of the environment, contributing to stable regional climatic conditions, retaining water and preserving natural diversity in Slovakia. This is the reason why the World Wetlands Day has been celebrated on February 2 for more than 50 years now.

The construction of the expressway R2 Košice, Šaca – Košické Oľšany, section II will significantly improve the transport comfort in the Košice region by relieving the town of Košice of transit traffic and reducing air pollution and noise in the eastern Slovak metropolis.
